I believe you have uncovered my secret to defeating the 80s Toyota rust monster.

It’s solid! Hideous, but it’s better than multiple holes I can stick my foot through.

I would use this stuff first. Amazing product. You actually have to leave some rust with it since it reacts with it, I usually get most of it off. But I just replaced the bit I used this on the Z for, all new now!

Haha, that’s so hard for me to do. I always get carried away, even if it’s something that I claim not to care about. I’d get tempted to brush the rust off first, and then I’d be tempted to smooth out the patch, and before you know it, the masking tape would come out...

Case in point: my leaking oil pan . I don’t care how the repair looks (at least I think I don’t) yet here I go wire-wheeling the rust, sanding, spreading epoxy, sanding again, priming with high-temp paint, and top-coating with multiple coats of high-temp black. I can’t help myself...

Lots of poor welding. There was a giant hole I could stick my foot through under the accelerator, another between that and the seat, and another by the dead pedal. I, umm..... patched them. Poorly. With a flux core wire welder (pro tip - doesn’t work very well on sheet metal). Then covered it all up with rhinoliner after taking this picture. It’s hideous, but solid even if water still gets through.

I hope you’ll learn to love this thing Denver! I wasn’t into them until two of my friends bought them - now I know them waaaay too well from a couple years of miscellaneous repairs and upgrades and have grown fond of them. These are such cool cars IMO. The last of a dead breed - a small truck (these way 3000LBS, which is SO light by today’s standards) with big old straight six. Just got back from a 3 day off roading/camping trip with one of them - it was a blast and the Jeep performed admirably.

Top tip: it’s still rusting away happily under the windscreen seal.

It’s good, you can even patch holes in things by laying fiberglass in it and painting over it. The guy at mercedessource.Com has a kit and a video. It is very tough, don’t get it on anything you care about.
